Maree Hitchen from PYBAR’s maintenance team has travelled to Papua New Guinea (PNG) to assist Newcrest’s Lihir operations team implement management systems to improve and unify processes across Newcrest sites.

The Lihir operation in Papua New Guinea is located 900 kilometres north-east of Port Moresby. Gold is the only product mined and for the year ended June 2012, 604,336 ounces of gold were produced.

Approximately 5,000 people are employed at Lihir – a combination of residential and fly-in-fly-out personnel, including around 3,000 direct employees, more than 90 per cent of whom are Papua New Guineans. Maree was selected for this assignment for her system knowledge and support from employer PYBAR Mining.

One of the key challenges for this project is the language and for this assignment Maree has learned key words from the main language in this area – Tok Pisin

‘This is a great opportunity to work with and train the locals and also to learn from them,’ says Maree, ‘The role includes teaching data entry processes for time sheets and assisting with purchase orders, working together with the team on a range of other systems and procedures to make their work more efficient and reporting easier.”

Maree stayed in the camp accommodation on site for her two trips to Lihir in March – each trip lasting approximately one week.

‘This program is a win-win all round – it’s a fantastic development opportunity for Maree, the team at Lihir receive the expertise of a PYBAR team member and PYBAR’s relationship with Newcrest Cadia Valley Operations is further strengthened’ says Senior Manager of HR at PYBAR, Wayne Bradford.
